Luxury Trains of India: Palace on Wheels, Maharajas' Express & the Golden Chariot

Luventra Team·22 September 2025·9 min read

India's luxury trains are rolling palaces — chandeliered dining cars, personal butlers, en-suite cabins, and curated excursions through Rajasthan's forts, Kerala's backwaters, and the Deccan Plateau. This guide covers India's five luxury train experiences, with real costs, routes, and what to expect.

India's Luxury Train Legacy

India's luxury trains emerged from the former rolling stock of maharajas and colonial-era first-class carriages, reimagined as all-inclusive moving hotels. They combine the romance of train travel with five-star hospitality — think wood-paneled cabins, multi-course meals with wine pairings, and guided excursions at every stop. While the prices are premium by Indian standards (₹3-15 lakh per person for a week-long journey), they include all accommodation, meals, excursions, and entertainment — and the experience is genuinely unlike anything else in Indian tourism. The trains operate September to April, with October-December being the most popular (and most expensive) period.

Palace on Wheels — The Original

Launched in 1982, the Palace on Wheels was India's first luxury train and remains the most famous. The 7-night journey covers Rajasthan's greatest hits: Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Sawai Madhopur (Ranthambore tiger safari), Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Bharatpur (Keoladeo bird sanctuary), and Agra (Taj Mahal). Each of the 14 saloons is named after a former Rajput state and decorated in that state's heritage style. Amenities include a spa, bar car, two restaurant cars, and a personal attendant (khidmatgar) for each cabin. Prices: approximately ₹3.5-7 lakh per person depending on season and cabin type. The included experiences (elephant rides, fort tours, cultural performances, safari drives) would cost significantly more if arranged independently.

Maharajas' Express — India's Most Luxurious

The Maharajas' Express, operated by IRCTC, is consistently rated among the world's leading luxury trains. Four different itineraries ranging from 3 to 7 nights cover destinations from Mumbai to Delhi via Rajasthan, or Delhi to Kolkata via Varanasi and Lucknow. The Presidential Suite (the most expensive cabin on any Indian train) is a 120 sq ft room with a living area, bedroom, and private bathroom. Even standard cabins are substantially larger than the Palace on Wheels'. Dining features multi-cuisine menus with dishes by award-winning chefs. Prices: ₹4-15 lakh per person depending on itinerary and cabin. The "Heritage of India" 7-night itinerary (Delhi-Agra-Ranthambore-Jaipur-Bikaner-Jodhpur-Udaipur-Mumbai) is the most popular.

The Golden Chariot — South India's Answer

The Golden Chariot covers South India — two itineraries covering Karnataka and Kerala/Tamil Nadu. The "Pride of Karnataka" route visits Bangalore, Mysore (Mysore Palace), Hampi (Vijayanagara ruins), Badami (cave temples), and Goa over 6 nights. The "Splendor of the South" covers Pondicherry, Thanjavur, Madurai, Kerala backwaters, and Kochi. The train is named after the famous stone chariot at Hampi and styled after the Hoysala dynasty's architectural heritage. Prices: ₹2.5-6 lakh per person. While slightly less opulent than the Maharajas' Express, the South Indian destinations it covers are genuinely difficult to experience as comfortably by any other means.

Budget Alternative — The Deccan Odyssey & IRCTC's Buddhist Circuit

The Deccan Odyssey covers Maharashtra and Goa (Mumbai-Sindhudurg-Goa-Kolhapur-Aurangabad-Nashik-Mumbai over 7 nights) at prices slightly below the Palace on Wheels (₹2.5-5 lakh per person). It's the best luxury train option for those interested in Maharashtrian and Goan culture. IRCTC's Buddhist Circuit train (Delhi-Bodh Gaya-Rajgir-Nalanda-Sarnath-Kushinagar) is a more affordable option (₹50,000-80,000 for a 7-night pilgrimage) — not luxury class but air-conditioned with included accommodation at each stop. For those who want the train romance without the luxury price tag, the Fairy Queen (the world's oldest working steam locomotive, a weekend excursion from Delhi to Alwar) offers heritage rail experience at ₹10,000-15,000.

Is a Luxury Train Worth It?

The honest assessment: luxury trains are not the most cost-efficient way to see India. The same destinations covered independently cost 60-80% less. What you're paying for is the seamless logistics (no booking separate hotels, transfers, guides, and tickets), the unique experience of five-star hospitality on rails, and the social atmosphere (fellow passengers tend to be well-traveled and interesting company). The best candidates for luxury trains: time-limited travelers who want to maximize destinations in one trip, couples celebrating occasions, and those who value comfort and convenience over budget optimization. Book 4-6 months ahead for peak season. Many luxury train journeys offer "last-minute" discounts of 20-30% for upcoming departures that aren't fully booked.
